Sifnos was considered to be the ancient God Apollo's island. The capital "Apollonia" was named after the god. The ancienthistorian Herodotus refers to Sifnians as the richest islanders. One of the reasons would be the fact that Sifnos produced, among other metals, gold and silver. There were sifnian coins before the athenian and the corinthian ones existed. The Sifnians built a good part of the temple of Apollo in Delphi and since then they started sending one golden egg every year.

The authentic greek cook book was written by a Sifnian. Sifnians are very proud of their cooking.

At the church festivals, where everyone is welcome, the authentic sifnian dishes and as much wine as you can drink is completely free. It is an honour to a Sifnian to sponsor a church festival.

There are pottery shops throughout the island where you can actually see pottery making and ceramics painting.

Hiking just about anywhere you will be surrounded by the so advertised greek oreganon, thyme and, as the Europeans call it greek tea (fascomilo). Rubbing your hands on their leaves and smell the aroma will lift you up to another level.

In the archaeological museum in the city of Castro among other findings you will notice glass containers found at a nearby location where a Roman cemetery existed. There as far as pre-historic structures and cemeteries.
